In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the fire used in this method is less intense and therefore so is the suction, making it a gentle treatment that can be used on patients of any age. According to Chinese medicine, this method is intended to remove stagnation and tonify weak Qi and Blood without depleting energy in the weak or frail. Basically, it means cupping will improve stress conditions, and the overall constitution of the body. Weak cupping is said to be effective for excess Heat conditions, such as stress, stomach problems, or neurological conditions such as paralysis and post-stroke weakness.
2) Medium Cupping (tonifying)
Suction in medium cupping is firmer than the weak method and can be safely administered to children over age 7 as well as adults. Muscular pains, stress-related conditions, children's ailments, and the basic constitution of the body can all benefit from medium cupping treatments. The term "tonifying" from Traditional Chinese Medicine means it will also act in enhancing and improving the basic constitution of the body.
3) Strong Cupping (draining)
The suction in this method is the firmest and therefore drains energy from the patient. Because strong cupping is considered to manipulate significant amounts of Blood and Qi, it often leaves marks on the patient. The purpose of such a treatment in Traditional Chinese Medicine would be to remove toxins and imbalances that cause diseases and to improve blood circulation. This method also treats painful, swollen joints as well as Frozen Shoulder Syndrome.
4) Moving Cupping
Moving cupping applies Strong cupping therapy to a larger area of the body. Cups may be moved while attached, the cream acting as lubricant. Allows for cupping larger areas, or better placement of cups. When moving a cup, grip the cup low on the bowl, and use the fingers of the non-pulling hand to gently hold the skin taut behind the cup as it moves. Often used on the Bladder Channel on the back. Traditional Chinese Medicine considers moving cupping effective for excess Heat conditions of the skin, such as acne, skin lesions, and inflammation. It benefits neurological conditions such as paralysis and post-stroke weakness and painful swollen joints, by manipulating excess energy and bringing up the Heat to the surface of the skin.
5) Needle Cupping (draining)
Needle cupping is used by acupuncture practitioners especially for red and painful knee and elbow joints. It is said to treat the pain and remove excess pathogenic heat at the same time.
6) Moxa (Hot Needle) Cupping
Moxa (Artemisia Vulgaris, or Mugwort) )is a great warming herb available both in loose form and in round, long cigar-shaped format. It is used by acupuncture practitioners for the common cold and flu, and is said to tonify the Qi and Blood, i.e., improving the overall constitution of the body. Hot Needle Cupping is said to relieve Cold Syndromes (of the Spleen and Stomach) and pain (arthritic joint pains, backaches and cold). Traditionally, it also treats conditions from bed wetting to sexual complaints such as impotence, and some difficulties in pregnancy..
7) Empty (Flash) Cupping
A Medium to Strong cupping method with very short applications, Empty Cupping is said to stimulate and move Blood and Qi on the weak and frail, particularly when Cold or Heat is the pathogenic factor. In other words, this form of cupping is used to raise the immune system in the weak and frail. This method is commonly used for treating children. The cups are applied and quickly popped off again.
8) Full (Bleeding) Cupping
In this method, bleeding is begun with a lancet before the cup is applied. Full cupping is traditionally employed by practitioners, especially in Europe, to purge foul blood (toxins), considered the cause of disease, from the body. Today, it is commonly used for sudden increases in blood pressure, discharging pus from boils and furuncles, Blood-Heat, and stagnation (constipation, diarrhoea, and other stomach problems).
9) Herbal Cupping
Herbal cupping is employed when stiffness and aching occurs, usually in the neck and shoulders (common cold, asthma and cough), caused by external factors such as Cold, Damp and Wind attacking the body. This method requires bamboo cups, a deep pan, water, metal clamps, fire and herbs in a prescription from a traditional medicine practitioner. The herbs and bamboo cups are immersed in with water in a deep pan, boiled, then simmered for 30 minutes before applying.
10) Water Cupping
Water cupping treatments require a highly experienced practitioner. This method involves the very quick and dexterous application of a glass or bamboo cup filled one-third full with warm water, without spilling the water! It is said to be beneficial for dry coughs, asthma, rheumatism, localized swellings, and pain.
