Heat: Heat accelerates blood circulation and promotes fluid exchange.
The heat is produced by friction of the molecules vibrating at high speed. To healthy cells, heat supplies energy and speeds metabolism, while it increases the breakdown of compromised tissue. However, to protect healthy cells, most medical and beauty ultrasonic devices have a maximum output, and have an auto shut-off after a certain time. Also, it is recommended the massage head be kept in constant motion. The aim is to rejuvenate healthy cells and harm no body tissues.
Cavitation: The ultrasound exerts an effect like micro-massage and excites the body tissues
Cavitation is a recognized occurrence in the tissues during ultrasound stimulation. It is the formation of very tiny bubbles (only a micron or so in diameter) of gas in the fluids in body tissues. Using pulsed ultrasound vibration reduces the tendency to "collapse" cavitation (tissue-damaging due to high pressure and temperature changes) and produces mostly "stable" cavitation, where the tiny bubbles oscillate within the ultrasound waves but remain intact. This kind of cavitation is associated with "acoustic streaming", which exerts viscous stress on the cell membrane and thus may increase membrane permeability, bringing therapeutically useful changes.
